A methodical structure for both the cast and machined geometry of complex die cast parts is employed at Design Smart. Not only do we separate cast and machined part configurations, we also colour code these features by type i.e. machined or cast. Attention is also paid to the names and order of these part design features particularly from a machining point of view. This helps ensure details are not missed at the N/C program development stage. These methods all greatly assist the downstream manufacturing processes and reduce the dependence on fully detailed component drawings. This can be very important when dealing with Chinese tooling vendors as a belts and braces approach to communication. Drawings are still important. However a comprehensive 3D data set is worth far more than 1,000 words.
